OS in Rio - wie wat waar?

De Olympische Spelen strijken voor hun XXXIde Olympiade neer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilië. Sporters uit 207 landen zullen het beste van zichzelf geven in 28 verschillende sporten. Op 33 verschillende locaties in Rio en 5 in São Paulo zullen verschillende notabelen in totaal 306 medailles verdelen.

Gymnastiekdisciplines op de Olympische Spelen

Artistieke gymnastiek maakt al van bij de eerste Olympische spelen deel uit van het programma. Aan vijf van de zes huidige toesten moesten de mannen het beste van zichzelf geven. De huidige formule stond vast vanaf 1932 in Los Angeles . De vrouwen deden hun intrede te Amsterdam in 1928 en sinds 1952 volledige onder de huidige formule. Voor de volledigheid: sinds 1984 maakt ritmische gymnastiek deel uit van het gymnastiekprogramma op de OS, die discipline wordt enkel door vrouwen beoefend. Sinds 2000 bekampen mannen en vrouwen elkaar in trampoline. In geen van beide disciplines heeft België dit jaar een afvaardiging.

Korte voorbeschouwing - mannen

Bij de mannen belooft de teamcompetitie het spannend te worden. China won met veel overtuiging de teamcompetitie in Londen (2012 en Peking (2008). Al twintig jaar overheerst China op de teamcompetitie op WK’s. Tot in Glasgow in 2015, daar won Japan de gouden teammedaille. Ook het Verenigd Koninkrijk passeerde China en bouwt zo verder aan hung stage opmars in het internationale turnen. Landencompetitie mannen te Londen..

Individueel lijkt er geen maat te staan op Kohei Uchimura (JPN), die zich stilaan de beste gymnast van dit tijdperk kan noemen. Hij won zilver in Peking, vervolgens won hij elke individuele allroundtitel tussen 2008 en nu (WK’s en Olympische Spelen). Hoezeer het ook lijkt dat zijn tegenstanders dichter bij hem in de buurt komen, hij heeft altijd nog ietsje meer. Zijn voornaamste uitdagers: Oleg Verniaiev (UKR), Max Whitlock (GBR), Nikolai Kuksenkov (RUS) & Manrique Larduet (CUB). Enige Amerikanen lieten dit jaar ook al scores boven de 90 punten optekenen: Jake Dalton & John Orozco. Individuele allround finale van Londen. 

Korte voorbeschouwing - vrouwen

Bij de vrouwen is er momenteel weinig te doen aan de hegemonie van de Verenigde staten van Amerika, zij overheersten de internationale tornooien de laatste vier jaar. Verwacht wordt dat zij ook dit jaar Olympisch kampioen worden. Opvallend is dat van de ‘grote vier’ gymnastieklanden van de laatste decennia, Roemenië zich niet wist te kwalificeren. Rusland kende enkele problemen de laatste jaren, maar lijkt er nu wel te kunnen staan. Verder zijn China en het Verenigd Koninkrijk de laatste twee podiumkandidaten. Ook een Amerikaanse gymnaste aan de top individueel: Simone Biles brengt in haar explosieve stijl erg moeilijke oefeningen, die niet veel andere gymnasten haar nadoen. Waar zij los richting de 62 punten turnt, blijven haar concurrenten rond de 60 punten scoren. Verder is het uitkijken wat de comeback van haar landgenote Alexandra Raisman inhoudt. Wordt Aliya Mustafina (RUS) weer de meest gedecoreerde gymnaste van de spelen? Ook Catalina Ponor (ROU) maakt een comeback, haalt zij haar beste niveau van in Sidney 2004 boven? Welke Chinese gymnaste steekt er bovenuit?

Korte voorbeschouwing - Belgen

Bij de mannen kon onze ringspecialist uit Waasmunster Dennis Goossens zijn selectie voor de spelen verzekeren na een quasi perfecte oefening eind juni in Nederland. Hij is een ringenspecialist en maakte nog maar recentelijk de overstap naar de topsportschool. Dennis maakt een goede kans om in de finale van de ringen te zitten, al liggen de scores van dit toestel vaak zo dicht bij elkaar dat hij er evengoed niet kan bij zijn. Het ligt heel vaak in de kleine details. Voor Dennis komt het erop neer een perfecte oefening te turnen!

Bij de dames konden we een fel verhoopte plaats als land in de wacht slepen. Op het laatste WK in Glasgow werden we 11e, wat ons hoop gaf om ons te kwalificeren via het Olympisch Test Event (OTE) in april eerder dit jaar. Een geweldige prestatie, als beloning van jarenlang hard werk van hoofdcoach Yves Kieffer. En hij legt de lat best hoog: “Als je daar dan staat op de Olympische Spelen, ben je er niet om je tevreden te stellen met je aanwezigheid daar. We gaan risico’s nemen, we hebben de oefeningen van de meisjes verhoogd om een kans te maken, en we gaan ze grijpen! En in de teamfinale, weet je nooit… Verder zijn er enkele oefeningen van de meisjes die een finale waardig zijn, we zullen zien”. De selectie bestaat uit: Rune Hermans, Laura Waem, Gaelle Mys, Nina Derwael & Senna Dirickx. Reserveturnster: Cindy Vandenhole & Julie Meyers. Nota: Axelle Klinckaert blesseerde zich helaas aan de knie en werd vervangen. Video van de belgen op het OTE.

De programmatie van spotza hangt af van het verloop van de competities. De bedoeling is om zoveel mogelijk Belgen in beeld te brengen. Voor turnen zal dat zeker het geval zijn voor de dames (zondag 7 augustus), voor de finales is die kans minder groot. Aantal gymnasten, formule & selectie

In 2016 is er plaats voor 196 artistieke gymnasten: 98 dames en evenveel heren. Selecties gebeurden op basis van de laatste wereldkampioenschappen, die van 2015 in Glasgow plaatsvonden. Zowel bij de mannen als vrouwen kregen de eerste acht landen in de lendencompetitie een rechtstreeks ticket voor de spelen. De volgende acht landen streden om de laatste vier landentickets op het OTE.  De overige plaatsen worden ingevuld met de winnaars van de toestelfinales in Glasgow en de beste allrounders van het test event. Verdere details vind je hieronder

Tijdens de kwalificaties van de teamcompetitie strijden de landen tegen elkaar in de formule 5-4-3. Dat wil zeggen dat van de vijf leden van het team er vier aan bod komen aan elk toestel, waarvan de beste drie scores tellen. Tijdens de finales wordt het wat strenger: 5-3-3 betekent dat slechts drie gymnasten per land aantreden aan elk toestel, en dat elke score ook meetelt. 

De te volgen lijst van de selectie ziet er als volgt uit. Nota: de selecties voor de Olympische Spelen te Tokyo (2020) zien er helemaal anders uit, afwachten wat dat zal geven.

WK Turnen - De Belgische mannen

De Belgische mannen aan zet!

In Nanning (China) turnde de Belgische mannenploeg zich in de kwalificaties van het wereldkampioenschap naar de voorlopige eerste plaats (334,385). Allround op alle toestellen scoorde de Jimmy Verbaeys de meeste punten (83,198). De hoogste individuele score kwam van Daan Kenis aan sprong (14,900). De komende twee dagen komen nog ongeveer 50 landen in 9 subdivisies in actie.

De Belgen beginnen hun wedstrijd goed aan sprong. De vijf gymnasten brengen mooie sprongen en de jury beloont hen met hoge scores. Daan Kenis zet met een Yurchenko met 2,5 schroef de hoogste score neer van de wedstrijd (14,900). 

Aan het volgende toestel, de brug, zet Maxime Gentges even de handen aan de grond  bij zijn afsprong, wat telt als val. De andere oefeningen bewijzen het potentieel van de Belgen. De moeilijkste oefeningen aan brug kwamen van Jimmy Verbaeys en Thomas Neuteleers. Thomas werkt het best af en kreeg 14,625 voor zijn oefening. Een goede start voor de Belgen.

Aan rekstok opent Jimmy voor het team, hij hoekt enkel een beetje af bij zijn afsprong. Helaas laat Maxime Gentges een val optekenen bij zijn spectaculair kolman-vluchtelement. Ook Thomas Neuteleers komt zwaar in de problemen tijdens zijn rekoefening. Kristof turnt een mooie en moeilijke oefening, maar de jury beloont hem niet zoals op de Europese kampioenschappen eerder dit jaar. Een score van 14,733 voor zijn oefening met vele variaties op de Tkatchev is eerder aan de lage kant. 

Halverwege de wedstrijd krijgt Karbanenko complimenten van enkele bloggers op het internet. “Belgie ziet er erg goed voorbereid uit tot zover… Ze doen erg mooie en haalbare oefeningen. Karbanenko voert klaarblijkelijk zijn taken goed uit!” (The All Around)

In de tweede wedstrijdhelft laten de Belgen meer slordigheden zien. Aan grond is het Siemon Volkaert die de hoogste score neerzet, een veelbelovende oefening beloont de jury met 14,400. Helaas laat Thomas Neuteleers een val optekenen bij zijn dubbele salto voorwaarts en stapt Daan Kenis even buiten met zijn dubbele gehoekte twistsalto. De anderen brengen propere oefeningen.

De teamsfeer zit erg goed, terwijl Kristof legt een mooie paardoefening af, de rest van het team laat duidelijk zien dat ze blij zijn met zijn prestatie. Daan laat echter twee vallen optekenen tijdens zijn paardoefening en laat zo zijn kansen op een goede allroundscore liggen. Siemon Volkaert doet slechts op drie toestellen mee, maar bewijst wederom zijn waarde voor het team. Als specialist aan het paard met bogen vecht hij zich door zijn oefening en neemt de eerste plaats (14,200) van het team. 

Hebben de Belgische turners aan de ringen nog genoeg kracht over om een kwalificatie af te dwingen? Daan Kenis brengt een oefening met veel zwaai-elementen en zet enkele stapjes bij zijn landing van de dubbele salto met dubbele schroef. Maxime ze die trentdverder met een erg propere oefening. Kristof zwaait zich vervolgens door zijn oefening, houdt zijn kruis een beetje hoog en zet een stap bij zijn dubbele gestrekte afsprong met hele schroef. Propere oefeningen, maar ze ontbreken nog wat moeilijkheid.

Met enkele vallen laat het Belgische team een niet echt foutloze indruk na. Ze begonnen sterk aan de wedstrijd, maar enkele fouten in de tweede helft deed maken de teamkwalificatie spannend. Na de eerste subdivisie staat ons land momenteel aan de leiding met 334,385 punten. Het is nog tot zaterdag 16.00 uur wachten eer we weten of onze bij de eerste 24 landen zijn. Tegen dan zullen nog zeker 50 landen het beste van zichzelf geven. Met deze score doet België alvast beter dan in Rotterdam in 2010 (331,509), waar we volgens dezelfde regels (aantal gymnasten) een 28e plaats behaalden.

Ech Sofia - Review junior qualification & team final

Great Britain overpowers

On the first day of the 31st men’s artistic gymnastics championships, the junior men compete their qualifications and team final. As expected, Russia battled with Great Britain for the gold. France, Switzerland and italy did for bronze. 

In the first subdivision Austria leads the field the whole time. Clean exercises gave them 236,220 points, ahead of sweden (233,254) and Romania (227,533). The Romanian didn’t get the same level as the women’s gymnastics of their country. 

In the second subdivision countries Spain and Israel got into the top of the ranking. Spain led the ranking until the last apparatus, they performed less on the pommel horse and ended up 4th in the team ranking. Israel performed very constantly on every apparatus and rose very steadily towards the provisional first place. 

The firework came at last: favorite teams Russia and Great Britain. They were in the same rotation, Great-Britain performed first, set a goal for Russia. The British gymnasts showed great consistency on every apparatus, showing both nice execution and high difficulty. The public liked the high bar flight elements a lot! Finally they won the golden medal, collecting 1,5 point more than Russia. The Russian gymnasts performed very firmly, using their body strength.  

Some countries got chances to the third place. France was all-around the best of them, they got 0,300 point more than Switzerland. Belgium started very well, but had some failures in the second half of the competition. The young and promising team of Italy got a bit too short for the third place, they ended up 5th.

Russia and Great Britain men’s favorites

This week the junior and senior men wil compete their competition, the 31st Men’s European Artistic Gymnastics competition. The junior men have a team competition during the qualifications, a final all-around and event finals. The seniors only compete after the qualifications in a team final and the event finals. Russia and Great Britain were last years biggest medal contenders. What will they do this year?

Junior competition

The junior men start wednesday May 21st their qualifications at 10h00 local time (Eastern Europe Time). Traditionally Great Britain and Russia compete for the first place, behind them other countries fight for the third place: Belgium, France, Germany, and Italy. Most of the junior gymnasts compete for the first time on a podium on an international competition. A first step into the road to the Olympic games. 

Each country team contains 5 gymnasts, of which 4 can compete at each apparatus. The best 3 count for the final team result. Junior men are born in 1998, 1997 and 1996. In the competition 37 countries will compete, 30 of them have a complete team. 

The first 24 junior gymnasts all-around qualify for the all-around final in friday. Brinn Bevan (GBR) is the favorite together with his teammate Niles Wilson and Valentin Starikov (RUS). The first eight gymnasts on each apparatus qualify for the event finals.

Thursday May 22nd the seniors compete their qualifications, starting at 10h00 local time (EET). The first eight countries qualify for the team final on saturday. Great Britain defends the men’s team final, while Russia tries to challenge them. Romania, Belarus and Germany struggle for the third place. 

Each country team can contain 5 gymnasts, but only 3 compete on each apparatus. Those three scores count for the final team result. A total of 39 countries are present, 26 of them compete in the team qualifications.

Senior team finals review

The senior event finals are held on the last day of the 30th Women’s European Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The finals are planned in Olympic order: vault - uneven bars - beam - floor exercise. Like in the junior competition, Russia and Great Britain won the most medals.

First score on vault was set by Giulia Steingruber (SUI). The defending European champion on this apparatus performed a handspring layout with 1,5 twists, she’s the only gymnast in this tournament performing that vault, and how! Her second vault is only a mainstream full twisting Yurchenko, but with the highest execution score of the final (9,133)!  Larissa Iordache (ROU) can follow her country mate Sandra Izbasa towards a  European gold. Yurchenko with double twist and tsukahara with full twist only leads to the bronze medal. With one gymnast to go, Ana Pavlova (AZE) knows it’s her time to shine. The former Russian gymnast has a reputation on vault and sticks her double twisting Yurchenko vault. Her second vault is a roundoff half on, half off… The crowd raised because her score was high enough to get the silver medal!

The final on uneven bars was one to remember forever! Surprisingly Iordache (ROU) qualified for this final, although bars is not her best apparatus, it proves her level of gymnastics. She became sixth. Tunney (GBR) is the first one to set a score to beat, with an exercise that reminds us of Elisabeth Tweddle. After her, Spiridonova (RUS) brings a very difficult exercise to a good end, she shows good vertical handstand lines each time. Bui (GER) and Popa (ESP) can’t do any better. 

Aliya Mustafina (RUS) has a certain reputation on bars and showed it. She makes a lot of combinations: stalder full to pak salto, full turn info full twisting double dismount. She overrules her country mate and outdoes her with a good 15-score. Rebecca Downie (GBR) qualified as first gymnast together with Mustafina, 15,100 and the Russian did better than in qualifications. The British gymnast showed her quality upgrading her exercise with 0,4 in difficulty. She showed a lot of first class flight elements: clear hip circle to piked Tkatchev and Tkatchev to pak salto. With a stuck full in double layout she got the gold medal.

On beam, the fans were looking forward to the performances of the Romanian gymnasts. Iordache showed a excellent tucked salto with full twist. And with a stuck landing on her triple twisting dismount, she ended just behind Kharenkova (RUS). The Russian performed just before her, and made just one mistake. She had the same difficulty as Iordache. Cleaner in execution, she got the gold. Mustafina looked like she was making up her exercise on the spot: great differences with the qualifications. A less higher difficulty note brought her to the third place, even with the best execution of the beam finalists. 

The Polish Marta Pihan-Kulesza deserves a special mention: as the oldest finalist, she brought the finest artistic exercise of the final. Further we mention the planche mount from Vanessa Ferrari (ITA) and the split mount from Rebecca Downie (GBR).

The floor final entertained the audience the most, with a tie on the first place… The new floor from Janssen-Fritsen is extremely bouncy, so the gymnasts can perform more difficult tumbling passes. The first two gymnasts end as a tie, Marta Pihan-Kulesza (POL) and Bulimar (ROU) both got the 14,400. Pihan-Kulesza really danced through her exercise on the pink panther.

Steingrubers (SUI) exercise only contained double tucks: full twisting double layout, double layout, double pike and double tuck. She ends up fourth. Meanwhile Iordache had already set the best score so far, even though she looked very tired after her exercise. It is logical that she is tired since she competed a lot the last week: she was in all finals - the team final and all four event finals. The Italian crowd really supported Vanessa Ferrari during her difficult exercise, a lot of twisting and double tucks in her routine! She ties with Iordache for the first place.

ECh Sofia - Review junior event finals

Gold for Great Britain and Russia  

The last day of the women’s tournament starts with the junior women’s event finals. The first eight qualifiers compete individually on each apparatus: vault, uneven bars, beam and floor. Russia, Romania and Great Britain are the teams with more medals in this finals.

On vault, nearly all vaults were of the Yurchenko vault family. It was Jurca (ROU) who set the first score to beat: 14,383 for her full and double twisting Yurchenkos. As the others tried to set their best scores, Tinkler (GBR) got a 14,349 with the same vaults. Her teammate and first qualifier Elissa Downie (GBR) got the highest score with a sky high double twisting Yurchenko and a well executed half on piked front off.

It was the vault gold medallist, Downie (GBR), who started the uneven bars final. She had a clean routine with a toe on shaposnikova and a stuck double piked dismount. She would end up fifth. As second on the start list, Skrypnik (RUS) set a huge 14,833 score. She had amazing clean lines and only a few breaks in her shaposhnikova and pak salto, continuing with a high piked jeager and a full twisting double back dismount. Melnikova (RUS) showed a few form breaks during her routine, but a difficult exercise that got her the second place. Enderle (GER) executed a beautiful and solid routine and ended up taking the bronze. Very good news for the German team, who has been very solid and original during this championships.

For the beam final, the crowd looked forward to see the Romanians perform. Unfortunately, Butuc (ROU) fell in her half twisting switch leap, a relatively easy skill that costed her a medal. Her teammate Iridon (ROU) had a clean but wobbling exercise, performing a gorgeous 1,5 twisting Y turn. The crowd screamed for her, she ended up in second place. Melinkova (RUS) performed a high sky back layout, and had very clean and correct lines, getting the first place. Tabea Alt, a promising german gymnast, stuck her double back into a well deserved bronze medal, giving the Germans another reason to celebrate.

The new floor of Jansen Fritsen gives the junior women a lot more explosiveness. This floor final was full of artistic showcase, along with very impressive quality tumbling. The Belgian Axelle Klinckaert and the British Catherine Lyons had probably two of the nicests choreographies of this European Championships, performing two beautiful, energetic an emotional exercises. Lyons ended up getting the first place, with the whole crowd getting emotional with her exercise, that she performed dramatically. Gorgeous leaps and clean tumbling was the key for her succes. Tinkler (GBR) really twinkled over the floor with a triple spin, double layout and a beautiful full twisting double back got her a tie with Romanian Andreea Iridon (ROU), who had the highest leaps and the most energetic attitude on floor today. With clean twisting form, she also deserved that silver medal.
